About Me
Hi there,
I’m Dr. Gauthamie Poolokasingham, C. Psych., a Registered Clinical and Counselling Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you.
A Decade of Diverse Experience
With over a decade of experience in the field of psychology, I consider it a privilege to continue to work with clients from diverse backgrounds. Throughout my career, I’ve had the honor of working in many different settings, including five universities, two hospitals, and two private practices with adults (aged 18 and over). My approach is grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the human experience and research informed treatment models, refined through a multicultural and humanistic lens, and is always tailored to meet each client’s distinct needs.
Expertise in Empirically-Supported Approaches
My expertise extends to a variety of intervention approaches supported by research, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also integrative approaches as needed to meet my client’s specific needs. While adept at addressing a broad spectrum of mental health issues as a generalist, I have also cultivated a particular expertise in aiding individuals with challenges related to anxiety, trauma, depression, racial and cultural identity, life transitions, women’s health (including women’s sexual and reproductive health), and student mental health.
Unique Perspectives and Client-Centered Care
My international background and personal experiences, having lived and studied in five distinct countries, have profoundly informed my practice. I am dedicated to fostering a therapeutic space that is safe, supportive, and inclusive. My aim is to build a strong therapeutic alliance anchored in trust, respect, and collaboration.
Academic Excellence and Community Engagement
I hold a PhD and Masters from McGill University and a Bachelor of Science from York University. I am grateful for numerous accolades I have received in support of my scholarly endeavors, including the SSHRC CGS Doctoral Award and GK International Scholar Award. My research has delved into the impacts of social determinants like racism on well-being, as well as broader issues of privilege and oppression. I am actively engaged in providing trainings and workshops for community organizations using my academic, research, and clinical expertise on related topics. Outside the clinic, I am an advocate for community well-being, actively contributing to various community, research, and non-profit organizations.
Commitment to Professional Excellence
My commitment to staying abreast of the latest advancements in psychology remains a personal and professional priority. Engaging in continuous professional development through workshops, conferences, and professional memberships allows me to bring current knowledge and evidence-based practices to my work with clients, ensuring a high standard of care.
Languages and Culturally-Informed Care
I speak both English and Tamil and am dedicated to providing culturally-informed care.
